Editorial Standards

Picky Eats publishes opinion. Most of what you read here is one writer’s view, formed after eating the dish, cooking the recipe, or using the kitchen gear for long enough to have something honest to say. The point of the site is to be useful, which means it has to be trustworthy first.

How we cover restaurants

When we review a restaurant, we have eaten there. Usually more than once. The bill is paid by the writer or by the site. We do not accept comped meals in exchange for coverage. If a restaurant offers a free meal and we accept, the piece will say so plainly. That is rare.

Negative reviews are part of the work. If a place is bad, the piece says so. We try to explain why rather than just complaining, because telling readers what to do instead is the whole point.

How we cover recipes and techniques

Every recipe and technique we publish has been cooked at home, often several times, by the writer. If a method does not work the way other sites say it does, we say so. If we are reporting a result from someone else’s kitchen, the piece credits them.

How we cover kitchen gear

Most of the kitchen gear we review is bought with the site’s money. Occasionally a manufacturer sends a sample. When that happens, the piece discloses it, and the verdict is not pre-arranged. If a sample is bad, the review will say so. We have returned products to manufacturers in worse condition than they arrived.

We never let a brand approve copy before publication. We never accept payment to remove a negative review. We do not run “best of” lists that consist of whoever paid to be on them.

Affiliate links

Some product links on the site are affiliate links. If you buy something through one of those links, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. The full policy is on the disclosure page. Affiliate revenue does not influence which products we recommend. It funds the testing of more products.

Corrections

When we make a factual error, we fix it and add a correction note at the bottom of the page with the date. We do not silently rewrite articles to make ourselves look smarter after the fact. Major corrections also get a note at the top of the piece.

Send corrections to editor@pickywops.com. Quick and well-mannered notes get faster replies than essays.

Sources and quotes

Quotes are accurate. If we paraphrase someone, the piece says so. If a source asked to speak on background, we honour that. If we cite a study or a number, we link to the underlying source whenever we can.
